Version 6.50 Upgrade Notes...

When upgrading to 6.50 from 6.42 there are three common snags users have been reporting:

  1. Fill servers need to be reconfigured to have priority other than 1. Servers with priority 1 get used first.
  2. If you had a large download list, Newsbin may take awhile to perform a one time conversion of the download list database.
  3. The 'Last Update' column in the groups list only updates when there are actually headers downloaded when performing an update. If Newsbin checks for new headers from a group and there are none, the 'Last Update' timestamp will not change

If you have any other questions after upgrading, check the Newsbin Forums to see if someone else has already asked the question. If not, you can either post your own question there or Contact Us.
Version 6.50 is available on the Newsbin Download Page. You can click on the 'Upgrade Notes' tab on that page for more information about what to expect upon upgrading.

Version 6.50 Release Candidate Available...

We don't announce through the MOTD until the release seems stable enough for broader distribution. We believe RC4 is at that point and it can be downloaded from the Beta Download Page.

Bogus MaxSpool Error...

If you are having problems updating headers, click on the Logging tab and see if you are getting an error that says 'Bogus MaxSpool' in it. If you are, it means your news server reset the article counts for this group. We have been getting more reports recently about this occuring so we are bringing it to your attention through this MOTD. The solution is to tell Newsbin that the articles numbers have been reset by following the procedure outlined in our Troubleshooting FAQ.

Issue in 6.50 Beta...

An issue has been uncovered in the 6.50 beta releases, including the most recent one, Beta 14, where the configuration file can get corrupted and cause 100% CPU use. We're looking in to a fix but the workaround is to go in to the Server Options screen and remove the bogus server entry that sometimes shows up.

Version 6.50 Beta Available...

We've been beta testing 6.50 for over a month and are now at a point where we are ready for a wider audience to check it out and provide feedback. The big new feature is Watch Lists. You can set Newsbin up to monitor a group for specific keywords and show you a list of matches as they appear. If you have very specific keywords, you can have Newsbin start downloading matching files immediately without you even being there. Read more about it and find the download link on the Newsbin Beta Page.

You can provide feedback through our Technical Support Form or, if you are a registered user on the Newsbin Forums, you can do so in the special Version 6 Beta Forum available to registered users.

Happy Tax Day (if you are in the US)

Newsbin Mac Download

We are still working on getting Version 6.50 beta up to snuff before we make a public beta announcement. We have a number of people testing it already but there are enough small issues with it that we have not announced a wide distribution yet.

Also, we are performing work to the Internet Search database to try to address the growing number of incomplete posts being returned. One of our sources for headers has decreased dramatically in reliability and we are testing a method to fill in the gaps it is leaving. We appreciate your patience while we work through this and hope to have the solution in place this week.

Version 6.42 Final Release

Version 6.42 has been released! It is worth the upgrade to pick up the bug fixes to the timeout handling. All upgrades are free to registered users. Just download and run the installer and it will automatically perform the upgrade, retaining all your settings (assuming you are upgrading from 6.40 or 6.41). If you are upgrading from Version 5 then most of your settings will be retained but you have to manually import your header database and will have to change your download path settings.

More information and the download link is on the Newsbin Download Page.

Header issues with certain News Servers...

Some people are reporting seeing the following error in the Logging tab when downloading headers:

'Server Reports bogus MaxSpool > MaxGroup Numbers....'

It happens if the server resets their article numbers. There is a one time procedure that will allow Newsbin to recover from this:

1) Go under Options/Setup and set the Download Age to something small but reasonable, like 10
2) Right-click the group, select 'Post Storage' and then 'Use Download Age'
3) Right-click the group and select 'Download Latest'.

After that, subsequent header updates should work again.

If you still have problems, or are running a version of Newsbin without this option available, contact us.

How to run Newsbin on a Mac...

We've been made aware of an inexpensive solution to running Newsbin on a Mac without having to buy an expensive Windows Emulator or Virtual Machine software. It's called WinOnX and is available in the Mac App Store for $5.00. The discussion thread where this was reported is in the Newsbin Forums.

Newsbin Pro Windows 10

Newsbin is one of the most popular and most downloaded newsreaders that has been around since 1997. Newsbin is a software that runs on Microsoft Operating Systems that downloads files and binary content from Usenet newsgroups. It is built by an image and database viewer.

Newsbin is one of the most popular Usenet clients to date. In fact, this is one of the very first Usenet clients created with the exclusive purpose of downloading binaries from Usenet. Newsbin was the first to adopt the NZB file format and consistently leads the way with technical innovations that help make Usenet experience better.

Newsbin’s search service searches for over 3500 days of binary retention, and it has an auto PAR feature that automatically downloads the required files in the set and repairs the broken and missing files.

Newsbin runs on Windows XP and any newer version on both 32 and 64-bit machines. For you to be able to use it, you will need to configure your settings to a proper Usenet server address to be able to start searching for files.
